Named after the saleyards
Newmarket takes its name from the cattle saleyards that ran here from 1877 to 1931, at the corner of Enoggera and Newmarket Roads. When they moved to Cannon Hill, the land was opened up for homes. Narrow laneways like Saleyards Lane are thought to follow old cattle tracks.
Queenslanders on hilly streets
Newmarket has plenty of timber Queenslanders, many on sloping blocks with stairs, plus townhouses and units near the train station. Rail, tram and creek
The railway reached Newmarket in 1899 and the tram along Enoggera Road in 1926. The Banks Street Reserve beside Enoggera Creek is a large bushland reserve on the western side of the suburb.
