Moving house checklist for Brisbane

6 to 8 weeks before

• Set your moving date, and check lease end or settlement dates.
• Get a clear written quote from a removalist (see how our hourly rates work).
• Start decluttering: sell, donate or book a council kerbside or tip run for things you won't take.
• If dates don't line up, ask about storage.
• Tell us about pianos, pool tables or other heavy items early.

4 weeks before

• Book your removalist and confirm the date.
• Order cartons, paper and tape. Our Box Shop offers free delivery on orders over $200.
• Book lifts and loading docks if you're in a unit, at both addresses.
• Arrange school, childcare and pet changes if needed.
• Start packing rooms you rarely use.

2 to 3 weeks before

• Arrange electricity, gas, internet and water connections at your new address and disconnections at the old one.
• Update your address with your bank, employer, insurer, Medicare, the ATO and the electoral roll.
• Organise mail redirection with Australia Post.
• Update your licence and vehicle registration address with the Queensland Government.
• Book cleaning for the old place, and check bond cleaning requirements if you're renting.

1 week before

• Finish packing everything except daily essentials. Label every box with the room and a short description. See our packing guide.
• Dismantle furniture you can, or tell us what needs dismantling.
• Defrost and clean the fridge and freezer if it's moving.
• Confirm parking for the truck at both addresses.
• Reply to our reminder email 48 hours before your move by tapping Confirm My Move.

The day before

• Pack an essentials box: chargers, medication, toiletries, kettle, snacks, toilet paper, bedding and a change of clothes.
• Keep valuables, documents and keys with you.
• Check the weather. If storms are forecast, keep in touch with our team.

Moving day

• Be there (or have someone there) to walk the crew through and answer questions.
• Do a final walk-through of every room, cupboard and the garage.
• Read meters and take photos of the empty property.
• At the new place, tell the crew where furniture and boxes go.

After the move

• Unpack the kitchen and bedrooms first.
• Book a piano tuner if your piano moved.
• Recycle cartons, or keep them for next time.
