From shire to suburb
Belmont was once the centre of the Belmont Shire, until it joined Greater Brisbane in 1925. Land here was sold in the 1885 Grassdale Estate, with lots along Old Cleveland Road. The shire even funded a steam tram to Norman Park, which ran from 1912 to 1926. Today the Gateway Motorway and Old Cleveland Road cross at a big interchange in Belmont.
