Named after a colonial homestead
The suburb takes its name from Lota House, built in the 1860s for politician and pastoralist William Duckett White. It's the oldest surviving house in the Manly and Lota area and still stands on Oceana Terrace. The estate was first subdivided in 1911, east of the railway line, and the Lota Park Estate to the west followed in 1918.
Esplanade homes and quiet streets
Lota is mostly family homes, from older weatherboard houses to newer builds, with some close to the Esplanade and the bay. Streets are generally quiet, though the Esplanade gets busy on fine weekends. Foreshore, seawall and creek
The Esplanade's seawall was built in 1931 as Depression relief work, and the foreshore is part of the long stretch of parks running through Wynnum, Manly and Lota. The boat slip at Lota Creek dates back to the days of Lota House. Lota station on the Cleveland line gives easy train access to the city.
