Limestone, coal and the Bremer

Ipswich began in 1827 as a convict limestone station called Limestone, quarrying lime for building in Brisbane. It was renamed Ipswich in 1843. Coal mining followed, and the city became known as Queensland's leading coal-producing area, with the Bremer River an early trade route to Brisbane.
